Getting the Best Value for Dish Network and DirecTV

For the past several years I've focused on who has the cheapest satellite TV service, and for a long time Dish Network was king in terms of low cost television, but times are changing and so are the prices. Instead of looking at the bottom line cost, consumers now need to dig a little deeper to find the best value in programming packages. You'll be much happier, and get a better value when you consider options over price.

Starting with the basics, DirecTV and Dish Network offer a similar hardware package with installation in four rooms and optional DVR, HDTV, or HD DVR receiver upgrades. DVR is short for digital video recorder. If you're familiar with Tivo, it does the same thing. An HDTV receiver decodes high definition television signals. You can get these separately, or together on a single device with both capabilities built in.

Programming packages are where the rubber meets the road, and it can get a little confusing. Both providers offer a very basic programming package of 40 to 45 channels. Unless you live in the country or rural area where cable is not available, these are not very good options since most cable companies offer basic cable for close to the same price but with more channels. The real value is found in their featured programming packages.

Typically, Dish Network is slightly less costly than DirecTV, but as you move up the line of programming you'll notice they start to level out, and currently DirecTV offers a wider selection, more channels, and a better price on it's high end programming. You'll just have to decide which merchant has more of the TV stations and shows you and your family enjoy watching the most. It doesn't make sense to have two hundred channels if you only watch five.

One last thing to consider is the hardware you have chosen in relationship to the type of programming you want, or equipment you already have in your home. If you do not have an HD ready television set, it is null in point to get any HD hardware or programming as part of your package. You don't need any special equipment to use a DVR, but there is an additional fee for the service, so this will be something you'll need to decide if you can live without or not.

In the end neither is cheaper than the other when you factor in you and your family's usage and expectations of the product. The trick is to get what you want the first time. Get something you will enjoy, and a package you will make the most use of, at a price you can live with. I emphasize "live with" because the cheapest package may not be the best value for your personal needs. Look at the big picture, not the name, before you decide who to go with for satellite TV, and you'll get your best overall value in the long run.

As an owner of this cute but powerful player for 3 months, I am very satisfied.

In the past 10 years I have got tons of video collections, movies, cartoons and TV series, most of them are in Divx and RMVB formats, some are H.263 and the others are in H.264. I have tried few other cheaper media players, but they can't decode my H.264 files; they even can't play my new MKV format files.

After I received this N7 player, it just did the job and it can play almost all of my H.264 and MKVs. It can even play some of my FLV and WMV files. So wonderful!

Now, I hook it up with my new 52" LED HDTV, with another 1.5TB Western Digital External Hard Drive. I don't have to stick to my 20" PC Monitor any more, and finally I could stay on my sofa and watch all my favorite videos on my TV through this cool player!

Infocomm 2008 kicked off their 3-day conference last Wednesday (June 18, 2008) with a vengeance. Held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, I had the opportunity to fly out for their opening day to see what the latest trends are and to get a first hand glimpse of new products in action. Upon arrival to the LVCC, the size of the convention was overwhelming to say the least and that was before thousands of people flocked to the doors after the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Broken up into two different halls and occupying over 1,050,000 sq. ft., there were at least 950 exhibitors showcasing their latest and greatest audio visual and electronic products to a floor of at least 15,000 people in attendance. This number does not include the plethora of meeting rooms being used for several technology seminars and workshops in addition to key note speaker presentations.

Although there were several different products showcased, one of the primary buzzwords for the conference was "Telepresence". "Telepresence" is defined as "a set of technologies which allow a person to feel as if they were present, to give the appearance that they were present, or to have an effect, at a location other than their true location." ( Wikipedia 2008 ) In a nutshell, the term "telepresence" is an updated term that seems to be replacing "Video Conferencing" as technology continues to advance. With telepresence, the person not in the office comes through in almost a 3D fashion making it seem as though they are actually present when they are not. Video conferencing is less technical and the people on the other end are included in a video fashion.

Walking through the "Telepresence Pavilion", the two new and most popular VC systems came courtesy of Polycom and Sony. Although the Polycom telepresence systems were exhibited in abundance, the Sony EVI-HD1 and BRC series of cameras were equally showcased as the latest and greatest HD cameras available for video conferencing/telepresence applications.

* Remove fingerprints and smudges with a dry microfiber cloth. Lens cleaning fluids are available and can also be applied to the microfiber cloth as needed. The fluid should not be applied directly to the lens. Only cleaners made specifically for camera lenses should be used; do not use cleaners made for eyeglasses.

* Use extra care in harsher environments. As described above heat and cold extremes can cause damage to lenses as well as the camera itself. Because cameras travel with us however, they are sometimes exposed to environments that are somewhat "hostile". Thus, extra precautions are sometimes necessary. For instance, in extremely cold weather it is generally best to carry the camera close to the body, perhaps covered by a coat to keep it warmer. On rainy days wrapping the camera in a plastic bag can help shield it from the moisture. The beach can also be hostile due to the potential exposure to wind, sand, moisture, and heat. Again, covering the camera with a plastic bag and shading it from the sun are good preventative measures.

Reducing contact and exposure to contaminants, proper cleaning, and protecting the lens from extreme environments are key to assuring the longevity of a camera lens. I have been playing with DVRs since Tivo was first introduced. My experience includes playing with these devices below:

I will not be comparing the MythBuntu or HTPC because they are not out of the box solutions. They require some sourcing of parts and baby sitting.

I purchased a Moxi 3 tuner unit with three Moxi Mates about two months back so I had sometime to play with it. They have since released a new update that now enables live streaming to the Moxi Mates. As of right now, the Moxi setup is perfect for me. The live streaming really completes this HD experience in my whole house.

PRICE: The comparison here is with Tivo and Moxi since ReplayTV and Panasonic are now out of the picture. If you have one room, your cost for a Moxi is $[...] (two tuner model). With Tivo HD, you are paying about 0 more (this price include buying a 500GB drive upgrade). Tivo HD XL is even more. So Moxi clear beats Tivo in cost. If you have three rooms, Moxi is 9 while Tivo will be significantly more since you have to buy 3 full featured Tivos and get lifetime subscription on each.

TUNER: Moxi offers a three tuner unit. Tivo has a max of two tuners. Having an additional tuner makes it easier to record all the slow you want.

NOTE: This model on Amazon is a TWO TUNER UNIT!!!!!!!!!! Please go directly to Moxi to get the three tuner model.

INTERFACE: The Tivo is easy to use. It is so easy that your grandmother can use it. However, Tivo have not upgraded their interface in a long time. It is not a full HD interface. The reason for that is that HD interface can slow down the device. Moxi HD is a full HD interface with a live preview window. Now if you are a Tivo user, you may find that it may be hard to transition to the Moxi interface. I found this as well. I would recommend anyone who is thinking about the Moxi to read the user guide before even turning the thing on. That way you will not have to suffer through the initial learning curve that undoubted frustrated on users here.

MOXI TICKER: Think CNN, ESPN Tickers. This feature allows you to get access to quick information via a bottom info bar while you continue to watch your program. All you need to do is to hit the ticker button and it brings up weather, sports, news, etc. etc. I find this quite usefully if you need to get some quick scores without turning on your tv or going to ESPN.

CONNECTIVITY: Moxi by default does not have wireless built in. Moxi only have an ethernet port. Some have expressed success using 802.11N bridges but they can be complicated when setting up. You are better off using MOCA or Powerline connectivity. Each Mate will need an connection.

EXPANDIBILITY: Moxi can be upgrade using eSATA external drives to 6 TB. Keep in mind unlike Tivo, the internal drive cannot be upgrade by the end user(yet). When purchasing an enclosure for an external drive, select only a eSATA interface only enclosure. USB/Firewire/eSATA multi-interface enclousres have been know to be problematic. According to AVS Forum, if you do not mind your drive exposed you can just connect a harddrive to power and use an eSATA/SATA cable. These two items below have been know to work with the Moxi

ONLINE SCHEDULING: Tivo's online scheduling leaves much to be desired. Tivo's online scheduling is not live. You cannot schedule something to be recorded in the next 15 minutes. It is not possible with Tivo. However, with Moxi you can see your upcoming recordings, cancel a recording, delete a recorded program and schedule a recording on their website live. Moxi's website actually queries your Moxi for this information when you logon online.

MOXI MATES: This is by far the best competitive advantage for Moxi. You can watch all your shows in full HD in up to two additional rooms at a time. This is instant streaming with no need to buffer and download like Tivo. So I pay for 1 cable card that allows HD that would have cost + plus monthly to get HD to my other TVs.

INNOVATION: One thing that bugged me about Tivo was the fact that they really have not done anything innovative. Purely IMHO, they seemed to be relying on lawsuits and settlements to protect their interests. I am thrilled to see Moxi as a competitor. Moxi is like how Tivo was when it first started... ... By Moxi releasing a major update indicates they will continue to innovate.

COMPATIBILITY: Moxi is DLNA certified. Tivo is not. What does this mean? Well, simply put you can streaming files from other DLNA certified devices straight to your MOXI and allow you to play it on your TV. Windows 7 and PS3 among others are DLNA certifeid as well. So if you have pictures, music and videos stored on Windows or PS3, you can play those on the Moxi as well. For the most part, it is really easy. It will find your Windows 7 easily. Keep in mind not some files might need to be converted if it is in a exotic format.

STREAMING FROM RENTAL PLACES: How about Netflix and Amazon streaming? Well, this is not as easy as Tivo (yet). Tivo has this integrated in their main system. Streaming from websites on Moxi requires PlayOn installed on a computer. Streaming goes from Netflix or Amazon to the the computer with Playon and then to Moxi. Now PlayOne comes free with your Moxi order. It is a value. I find that PlayOn works quite well with Moxi. Now there is a hidden gem with this setup.. PlayOn worths with HULU! HULU is probably the better free streaming sites. Hopefully at the rate Moxi is innovating, I have a feeling some of these features on be added on the menu.

SUPPORT: I had to contact MOXI a couple of times for help. They have three methods of contacting them: online chat, email and phone. I find them to be knowledgable and helpful in their responses.

WHAT YOU WILL NOT GET: No Tivotogo. No over the air tuner. You must have cable. You cannot extract or backup your videos.

This player is amazing. This is much better than the players before bdps1 gen, even the bd91. There are some things to consider in order to Blu-ray. He should not play CDs. The Moxi combined with the Moxi Mate was the only HD-DVR on the market which met my requirements so I decided to try it out. I have been using the Moxi and Moxi Mate for about 3 months now.

Pros:
-No subscription fees.
-Two-week program guide which can be viewed in a vertical or traditional grid type guide.
-Online scheduling with instant conflict notification.
-Moxi Mate which allows you to watch recorded shows on a different TV in the house. With the upcoming update you can also watch live TV on the Moxi Mate.
-The Moxi Mate allows you to access the same premium content you can get on your main Moxi box without paying additional cable box or cable card fees.
-Supports clear-QAM channel mapping (a must have for me).
-Very responsive navigation through menus.
-Supports Netflix, Amazon On-Demand, and Hulu through Play-on. I love being able to watch Hulu on my TV without having to watch it on the computer.
-Backlit remote.
-Excellent/friendly customer support.
-Super Ticker to keep updated on sports scores, stocks, news, etc.
-Built in Rhapsody and Flickr.

Cons:
-Remote does not have a TV input select button.
